Hay Testing Info - How To Test Your Hay
NAG Bags is always recommencing hay testing? Why? It's such a small price to pay for the benefits it will give you, and you're stuck.
We have had customers that have purchased a barn full of hay and have sore horses in a week! Too much sugar or too much protein for their animals' needs.
As for most horses, hay is about 97% to 100% of your grazing animals' diet, so we need to get it right.
Slow feeders are only as good as the hay type matching the horses' needs - rich hay is still rich hay in a slow feeder. Yes, it will make intake somewhat slower ( which is excellent), but the overall goal is to have hays available for your animal 24 hours a day, without the fears of laminitis and obesity.
Check and ask your suppliers - do you have a hay test? If not its a usually under 45 dollars to have done and a great piece of mind. You then can balance your horse's complete ratio after you have this.

See below hay sites and ways to sample your hay. You do not need a core sample to get a hay test done. Use a coat hanger and push into at least nine different bales for a small center sample, place into a large ziplock, label, and you're ready to mail! Simple!
