The Small Square Bale Bag is an ideal choice for 24-hour slow feeding, designed to hold a full two-tie bale with ease. It’s a convenient option for road trips, weekend shows, or when you’re away for a couple of days and want peace of mind knowing your animals have steady access to forage. These bags can be placed loose in the pasture to mimic natural grazing or set inside a tub or box feeder for horses with shoes.
Nag Bags help extend forage time, reduce hay waste, and keep grazing animals calmer and more content. Slow feeding supports cleaner environments and may reduce the risk of ulcers, colic, cribbing, stall vices, and inhalant allergies. Using multiple nets around the feeding area can also encourage movement and support a paddock-paradise style setup.
All nets include a strand of twine and a toggle for easy use.

The size of the net hole you choose depends on the type of animal you are feeding, its developmental stage, lifestyle, and what hay type you are providing. See our Net Guide for more information and our Hay Testing page.

1 inch: Ponies, miniature animals, and young mini goats and lambs will all do very well with 1-inch netting.
1.5 inch: This is our most popular size for equines, donkeys, mules, alpacas, goats, sheep, llamas, rabbits, and yes, even chickens!
2 inch: For larger breeds like drafts, warmbloods, working horses, young and older horses, and calves.
2.75 inch: For cattle and horses, when consumption is not an issue, just wanting to keep the hay in the feeder. The 2.75 is a great net, especially in colder climates. It can be used for older horses, growing, working & racehorses, and it works great for cattle. This net needs to be used in a feeder as its larger holes could be a hazard.

When introducing slow hay feeding hay nets, always provide loose hay along with the NAG Bag for the first week. Loose hay feedings assist your animal in learning how to "graze" from the nets properly, minimizes the chance of net damage, and prolong the life of your NAG Bag.
Remember, slow-feeding is only as good as the hay that’s being offered. Meeting the animal's needs is very important, and ensuring that you have the correct hay type will help ensure successful net feeding.

The large-sized hay nets with the highest capacity are Round Bale and Large Square Bales. The capacity of these hay nets is tailored to accommodate the size of bales, measured in feet (width x height).

NAG Bags can be used with shod horses. However, the nets should be placed in a tub, feeder, hay ring, or hung out of the pawing range. We do like to see the net in a lower position, if possible for a more natural foraging position.

Hi, I've been using Nag Bags for many years now, my horses always do well on them and they're always happy and content. These nets are tough and hold up against the rough treatment of my horses. Highly recommend!!
I’ve been really happy with this 1.5" square bale hay net. It’s sturdy, feels well‑made, and I especially love that it’s knotless—no rough spots, no snagging, just a smooth, durable mesh. The closure design is excellent; once it’s fastened, the bag stays shut, even with enthusiastic hay‑pullers. It’s also genuinely easy to fill, even when I’m working with loose hay instead of a compact bale.
When I fill it to around 20 pounds, it typically lasts about 12 hours per horse, which has been perfect for keeping them content without constant refilling.
The only thing I don’t love is that when the net is empty and wet, it tends to get twisted, and straightening it out can be a little annoying. Not a major issue, just something to be aware of.
Overall, it’s a solid, reliable hay net that does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and I’ll definitely be getting more.
I have been using the nag bags for several years they hold up well . They hold a full bale so my little mare always has hay available without much waste.

For our 20 year old big guy this woks great. He can easily eat as much as he needs but has almost entirely eliminated the mess. The nets are generously sized so easily for over a small bale. Wish I had ordered a new net from Nag bags for my other horse.
I have a horse that chokes if fed free choice hay, so I use the Nag Bags slow feeder hay nets to allow him to only take small bites of hay (1.5" size). The bags get heavy, every day use and hold up extremely well.
I have had my nets for 8+ years now. They are still in great condition. I have the 1.5” and 2.0” nets. My horse eventually got frustrated with the 1.0” net. I love that they are soft and have no knots. About once a year I throw them in my washer machine to soften and clean them up.
I love this bale bag. I had to switch to the 1” as my horse has mastered the 1.5” but the old bag still looks next to new with no holes after almost 2 years of daily use.
I also find this bag a little wider than other brands which makes it a lot easier to get over the bale.

I have a bunch of these nets! I use them in the stalls and out in the pasture. I love that they’re knotless so they don’t damage my horses gums. They’re also very easy to fill compared to other nets. I had a problem with the seam on one of my bags and Nag bags customer service was wonderful and replaced my bag. I highly recommend them!
The nag bags make life nicer for my horses and way easier for me. I use the big square nets for 3 that eat together and the 3-4 flake net for a horse that foundered. So much nicer for all of them!

Easy to use and tough enough to withstand a determined mare
I have used a lot of different brands of hay nets for my horses for a lot of different reasons and these have been the easiest to use and such a nice material that I don't have to worry about my horses teeth!
Last year purchased 1" hay net for my fat boy......and now needed larger holes and purchased the 2" and it is great fits an entire bale and if you want to get greedy you can get a least another half bale in there! Love these and my other has held up very well!

I have a friend who purchased this and told me they were great. I haven’t used mine yet, but I’m sure it’s a great product for feeding a animal slowly.
We have been using Nag Bag nets for many years on a variety of sizes of large round bales and small squares as well as the hanging flake nets. The nets have made the management of a herd of up to 20 lesson and resale horses ranging in size from minis to draughts much simpler.
The nets significantly reduce our feeding and fence repair labour. We increased the size of our paddocks and group horses into small herds of 3-5 animals with similar feed needs. This improved socialization and increased activity levels. We put bales on rubber mats to keep hay and net clean and the larger horses also have a round bale feeder
New nets last 2-3 years without repair even when exposed to sun, rain, and snow. We have several 6+ year old nets that are easy to repair a few times per month.

I purchased my first nagbag about 8 yrs ago and have purchased several more since then because they work so well. They are soft in my horses mouth yet very sturdy and i love that they can be repaired as needed. Easy to wash, stops hay from being spread and wasted, and keeps my horse eating in a way that is similar to grazing. I have successfully used them with 6 different horses so far.
