The size of the net hole you choose depends on the type of animal you are feeding, its developmental stage, lifestyle, and what hay type you are providing. See our Net Guide for more information and our Hay Testing page.
general guide below:
1 inch: Ponies, miniature animals, and young mini goats and lambs will all do very well with 1-inch netting.
1.5 inch: This is our most popular size for equines, donkeys, mules, alpacas, goats, sheep, llamas, rabbits, and yes, even chickens!
2 inch: For larger breeds like drafts, warmbloods, working horses, young and older horses, and calves.
2.75 inch: For cattle and horses, when consumption is not an issue, just wanting to keep the hay in the feeder. The 2.75 is a great net, especially in colder climates. It can be used for older horses, growing, working & racehorses, and it works great for cattle. This net needs to be used in a feeder as its larger holes could be a hazard.

When introducing slow hay feeding hay nets, always provide loose hay along with the NAG Bag for the first week. Loose hay feedings assist your animal in learning how to "graze" from the nets properly, minimizes the chance of net damage, and prolong the life of your NAG Bag.
Remember, slow-feeding is only as good as the hay that’s being offered. Meeting the animal's needs is very important, and ensuring that you have the correct hay type will help ensure successful net feeding.

The medium-sized hay nets have a larger capacity, capable of holding approximately 5-6 or more flakes of hay. These are ideal for extended feeding periods or for multiple horses.
The large-sized hay nets with the highest capacity are Round Bale and Large Square Bales. The capacity of these hay nets is tailored to accommodate the size of bales, measured in feet (width x height).

NAG Bags can be used with shod horses. However, the nets should be placed in a tub, feeder, hay ring, or hung out of the pawing range. We do like to see the net in a lower position, if possible for a more natural foraging position.

I like the quality of the net! The only thing that bothers me is the top of the net, it is all bundled up and tied at the top by a carabiner which makes this space very small hard to eat for the horses.

works well, does the job. Make sure to not use the bottom hole to attach it to the pvc as the horses will tear it out. Gets very heavy with mud season but that's to be expected
Installed my new 2” slow feeder net to our Poly Ring feeder. The horses are able to eat 24/7 and not waste any hay. This net is durable and withstands temps of -30 here in Alberta. I haven’t noticed any holes or much freezing up yet. Will be ordering another eventually.

I have a 15 horse boarding facility, in Maryland, US. I only use rounds for 3 months but the lovely horses that flick the hay out of the poly ring looking for the best morsel make me want to scream. This net is super quick to install, need 2-3 people but it we installed 5 in less than 4 hours, the first was a learning curve, the last took 25 min. Purchased the 7’ with 2.75” openings. Will recoup cost in one winter.
Great product, wasn't sure how the top would be closed, but the hardware is heavy duty.
After struggling for years with heavy full nets I decided to try the net toppers and pipe kit. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner! The pipe kit included everything I needed so didn’t have to run to hardware stores. Weaved the pipe through the net, connected the ends, and attached to the feeder within a half hour all by myself. I should have attached lower on the feeder (but will be an easy adjustment) as the pony gets hay out the bottom but love that the net doesn’t get frozen in the ice/snow that packs around. Throw the feeder over and done! So much easier to feed on my own now!!!
I ordered the 5ft net with 2.75" holes, but had no idea how LONG it was going to be. I'm happy to say it measured out approx 22 feet long. I cut the net to make "grates" for my slow feeders - by roping the net on all four sides to a wooden frame. And I had enough to do all my feeders - yay! I've ordered Nag Bags in a smaller hole size before and my Belgian mare just rips them in no time. At this size there is hardly any hay wastage and no frustration, so all 8 horses are leaving the net alone and just enjoying their low sugar hay. Thanks!
Love these nets with the black plastic round bale holder. Makes life way easy & the horses are super content on the free choice. Highly recommend & have told all my horsey friends their crazy not to feed this way. No muss, no fuss & NO wasted hay. Love Nag bags!!!
